NOTES: Almost half of the films on this list were originally shown on HBO, including the outstanding documentaries Hot Coffee and Living in the Material World. Of the drama films here, Polanski’s Macbeth is pleasingly insane and Soderbergh’s Contagion is chillingly clinical and precise in its presentation of mass death. Drive is admirable more for its visual style than its script, but Ryan Gosling gazes prettily at the city lights. House of Sand and Fog is good looking, but unsatisfying. Anyone who lived through the 1980’s will enjoy Hot Tub Time Machine, or should get a sense of humor. Unstoppable is so full of cliches and terrible camera work, it’s nearly unwatchable.
