… If we now appreciate the Gilded Age, with all its colorful excess, corruption, and Homeric despoilment of natural and human resources, as the epic prolegomenon of the modern nation, this first decade of our twenty-first century feels eerily more like a fin-de-siecle in which signs of terminal hypertrophy abound. One senses that the hard bust following the big boom is surely coming.
